This is the sixth blog post in a series taken from my book ‘ Networking tips for busy female professionals’. Each week, we will take a tip from the book and publish it in a blog post.
Joining people in the queue for food or the bar – or for us females, the queue for the toilet – is a great way to start small talk with someone. It’s easy to comment on something to do with the situation you are in, for example,
‘The food looks fantastic tonight’
‘Bang, goes my diet for today!’
‘What takes your fancy on the menu this lunch time?’
‘I’m looking forward to a cold drink, what are you having?’
The key here, is to get safely get a conversation started. Good positions to stand where you will get high levels of footfall are:
- Near the toilets
- Near the drinks table
- By the seating plan
To find someone to talk to, all you need to do is catch someone’s eye and smile at them. I promise you, they will come over and talk to you.
Action points:
- Next time you are at an event are not particularly fussed who you meet, try standing in a position with high footfall and practice smiling at and catching someone’s eye.
