Working the room tip 5: Engineer who you sit next to

This is the fifth blog post in a series taken from my book ‘ Networking tips for busy female professionals’. Each week, we will take a tip from the book and publish it in a blog post.

At most business gatherings there is normally a formal part of the proceedings, be it a seminar, speaker, or meal. As a busy female professional you want to make the most out of the relationship building opportunities when you sit down to this part of the proceedings.

Five minutes before the sit down part of an event starts, ask your host to introduce you to one of the people you have come to the event to meet. You then simply say ‘I’ve enjoyed our conversation, may I join you…’

If you’ve made the right impression, the answer will normally be ‘yes’, and you now have a huge opportunity to build upon your initial conversation and develop a deeper relationship during the formal event proceedings.

Action point:

  1. At your next networking event, decide who on the guest list it would be most beneficial for you to develop a relationship with. Ask your host to introduce you 5 mins before the formal part of the event starts.

If you have enjoyed this tip and would like to get more of the tips before the book is published, then read on
